HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FIRST DECADE
It's high time to take a tabyk (a large ancient Sakha tambourine) in our hands and recollect every festival with every beat.
The first beat: TABYK-90.
The performance of such vigorous sakha bands as Choroon, Serge, Aytal, made a revolution in the cultural life of the Republic. Inspired by Michael Tumusov, they created a special style of ethnic rock that is based on the Olonkho epic and shamanism. At that time, brave music interpretation seemed very unusual and remarkable.
Meanwhile, young bands competed. Eting , of Suntaar, deserved the 1 st prize for their arrangement, Kerekh, of Churapcha, was awarded as the most promising, Churapcha , of the same settlement, got a special prize, Muruchene , of Ust-Aldansky, gained the audience's favour.
By the end of Tabyk-90 , it was vivid that Yakutian rock was deeply philosophical and free of political issues.
The second beat: TABYK-91.
Next festival promoter Alexander Lipnitsky, a free artist and incredibly versatile person, defined the festival as “ethnic”. Later, this attribute was widely used. Tabyk turned into the only international rock music festival of such a scale and extraodinarity in the Far East .
Tabyk-91 was a true “ethnic get-together” with many guests from Russian regions, mainly republics, and abroad. For instance, a bunch of Tuvinian performers – Biosintez, Tyva and Lama , a Voice of Asia prize-winner; Kudrali Bolmanov, of Kazakhstan, and Finish Volonto Comissio . The audience enjoyed Yakutian Choroon , Serge and Aytal as well.
The third beat: TABYK-92.
Invited British, Japanese and Americans bands failed to arrive due to financial problems. A.Lipnitsky arranged the arrival of Atas ( Moscow ). Muscovite s added a romantic touch to the event. For the first time Tabyk included perfomances of such rock bands from Yakutsk as Bronepoezd-14-69 which was on the top of its fame, and Santa-Maria with its heavy stunning music.
The forth beat: TABYK-94.
After two-years pause, the organizers decided to rethink the concept of the festival. As a result, the show offered a variety of music styles. Having welcomed Shining Path from Great Britain , Tabyk experienced the 1 st performance of electronic music. Creative laboratory Art Club began its work and Conference on the condition of European rock took place. Cholbon , Aytal , and Djyulga Djyuhaala amuzed the audience with some kind of an opera based on Olonkho motives. Mongolian singer Sarantya whose grandmother is Yakutian, was a wonderful ethnic adornment of the show. Khardyy amazed its fans by crying ‘ Coo-coo, a Cuckoo Sings' in the Sakha language. Rock fans must remember the first performance of legendary Mortemirus .
The fifth beat: TABYK-95.
That time Tabyk took place in a recently built Palace of Sport . Lipnitsky suggested inviting most notable musicians. As a result, Tabyk had the coolest “cocktail” of celebrities: Andrey Makarevich with his Mashyna Vremeny , Boris Grebenshokov with Aquarium , A.F.Sklyar with Va-Bank , Albert Kuvezin with Yat-kha , and Stepanida Borisova. Liuis Carroll, Norma Gin and Tvary made their debut. Rave music gained ground in Yakutsk after Rave Formation Night Party .
The sixth beat: TABYK-96.
The 6 th Tabyk had a lot of suprises. Stepanida Borisova accompanied by Cholbon “killed” the audience with her heart-rending compositions. Zhanna Aguzarova's clothes and unequal behavior provoked a slight shock. The Khatylaevs, a family band, neighed like horses. Uncle Robert from Yat-kha had fun on the stage together with Tvary and Mortemirus . Zhenya Fedorov from Tequila-jazzz was behaving inproriately quiet, while Mogool Shuulan just “got away” from the press-conference. Tabyk-96 also included Authentic Toxic by British DJ. The improvisation performed by all the guests turned out being the most striking and extraodinary surprise.
The seventh beat: TABYK-98.
Acclaimed music observer Artemy Troitsky finally visited the festival. He joked, “I visited Tabyk. Now it would be easier for me to die”. The otther honorable guests were: Huun-Hur-Nuu (Tyva), Inna Zhelannaya ( Moscow ), Mystery Juice ( Scotland ), and Vopli Vidoplyasova (the Ukraine ). Witnesses considered that festival as most official and chaotic. They are sure to remember failure with electricity in Opera Theatre that resulted in a big mess with concerts. That was a stress for the organizers… The rest found the whole situation as funny.
Artemy Troytsky claimed Tabyk would have a brilliant future. UNESCO will include the festival in the list of the planets's most important events; the leaders of ethnic, rock, and alternarive music will come in Yakutsk from all over the world; Tabyk Records will appear to release and sell millions of Yakutian musicians' albums. Well, all this sounds really fantastic. But wait! What if everything is much easier to obtain than it seems to be? Per aspera ad astra! We hope that soon Tabyk will be able to rank with Woodstock .
10 th Year Anniversary: Tabyk-2000
After rumors concerning the next Tabyk turned out to be true, anxious look of its devotees changed into triumphant. Panem et circences! Tabyk-2000 took place on December 2-4. Festival “godmother” Antonida Koryakina, the head of Culture City Department answered questions.
- What are the main goals of Tabyk-2000?
- We are gathering all those who has been connected to the festival during this years. That is how we charge low batteries. On the other hand, Tabyk remains to be unique opportunity for young groups to reveal themselves.
- Some people felt pessimistic about the festival. They state local rock music suffer the stagnation.
- Michael Tumusov like others feels optimistic. Why? We believe Olonkho (the national Yakutian epics) is able to inspire musicians endlessly. With toyuk and shamanian rhymths, it composes the very original rock. Besides, festivals became real only by the “age” of 15-20.
- Any interesting events?
- This year there will be an exhibition, a sort of Tabyk Museums. The expositions provided by music lovers are to be demonstrated. We've got applications from guys playing electronic music and they got included in the program. Also, we'll do audio and video versions of the fest.
- Can we expect well-known guests?
- Yes, Chayf, Tequilla-jazzz and others.
