HISTORY OF TABYK

Tabyk Ethnic Music Festival has been taking place since 1990. Dmitry Vasiliev, a young scientist, Alexander Ermolaev, a musician, and his brother, a TV-man and playwright, Semen Ermolaev, inspired the organization of the first festival. The “father” of the festival, Tumus Mekheele, created the idea. The first Tabyk welcomed nine bands, all playing ethnic rock. Only Aytal remained the same through the past decade. The other bands either broke up or changed their stuffs and names.

Tabyk is unique. It is the only festival to deal with traditional ethnic music in the Far East, and across Russia . Over the years, Tabyk became international. It hosted bands and perfomers from Kazakhstan, the Ukraine , Mongolia , Finland , Great Britain , and other Russian regions. Tabyk participants performed in Europe and Asia and took part in Avignon festival.

Tabyk is an open festival which includes performances of ethnic singers and dancers, exhibitions of handicrafts, creative laboratories, press center, art club, video conference…. The music fest is the key point of intercultural ties development. Tabyk is a long-awaited event for thousands of music lovers. It is a good place to set useful contacts for further creative work and business, the best opportunity to “charge low batteries”.

Fest Music became available on CDs. 'Tabyk: The Modern Sakha Music' Double Album ( Moscow , 1991), and 'The Best of Tabyk' Album (Ekaterinburg, 1995) have been released. Subtle musical critics Alexander Lipnitsky, Artemy Troitsky, and Galina Semenova, popularize the idea of ethnic music and Tabyk in mass media. And we are extremely grateful to our former promoter, Michael Maltsev, who works at BBC World in Great Britain.

Tabyk is not just concerts and mucisians. It is a large team of like-minded enthusiasts – artists, designers, stylists, journalists. Marina Khandy, Lena Kiseleva, Yakov Aleksandrov, Alexander Danilov, Vasilina Krivoshapkina, Kristina Gaid, Ivan Krivogornitsyn, and many others are faithful members of the Tabyk organization committee. For last three years, Marina Sukueva remains the leader of the committee.
