The Republic's state policy in culture and arts field is aimed at spiritual and moral development of population, creation of basis for creative selfactualization, preserving and promoting ethnic and cultural uniqueness of the Republic's peoples.
In 2005 Yakut heroic epic Olonkho was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, being the most ancient local genre of oral folk art, listed among greatest monuments of world epic culture. In order to study, preserve, and promote this unique phenomenon the years 2007-2015 have been declared the Olonkho decade.
In order to provide state support for culture and spiritual development of individual the Republic has adopted and is implementing Providing a Basis for Spiritual and Cultural Development of Peoples in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in 2007-2011 State Target Program and State Target Program on preserving, studying and promoting Olonkho Yakut heroic epic in 2007 - 2015.
There is a wide network of cultural and arts facilities in the Republic: 526 cultural and pastime centres, 529 libraries, 93 children's musical and art schools, 88 museums, 10 theatres and concert halls, and 73 cinemas. 529 historical and cultural monuments in the Republic are protected by the state.
